Romantic love is a myth.
Hear me out. Romantic love being a myth remains a complex question with no definitive answer. It depends on several factors, including individual beliefs, cultural backgrounds, and interpretations of love itself. But what does Seun and Chioma’s love story show us?
“And they shall live happily ever after” the MC pronounced at the end of Seun and Chioma’s wedding reception. For the guests who came for many varied reasons e.g., Owambe, Party Jollof, and so on, this pronouncement by the MC signalled the end of this celebration but for Seun and Chioma, it was only the beginning.
Seun and Chioma struck love like a rogue meteor – fast, fiery, and leaving everyone else dazed and confused. “Opposites attract,” everyone muttered, shaking their heads, particularly at the tribal divide wider than the Grand Canyon between them. After surviving the wedding reception (ignoring the quarrel over dwindling palm wine, meat, and bottled water), Seun and Chioma finally thought they’d won the war. Little did they know, it was just the first skirmish in a battle royale of epic proportions – them versus the world, and maybe, just maybe, each other.
Before I dissect Chioma and Seun’s marriage like a literary critic gone rogue, allow me to introduce the dynamic duo. Let’s just say, their happily ever after might need a few rewrites.
Seun, the child of affluent parents, might as well have been born with a silver spoon glued to his tongue (and probably a fabulous pair of sunglasses perched on his nose). As the lone male amidst his trio of sisters, pampering became an Olympic sport in the household. By day, he wields his magic wand (read: stylus) as a freelance graphic designer, conjuring visual delights. By night, he’s the sultan of style, rocking threads that would make even the most fashion-forward peacock jealous. So yeah, let’s just say Seun knows a thing or two about being pampered and expressing himself through killer looks.
While destiny dealt Chioma a rough hand at birth – eldest of three, orphaned young, and facing land-grabbing relatives – she’s no damsel in distress. This woman started hustling before most kids even grasped the concept of an allowance. Forget hobbies, her days were filled with supporting her mom and siblings, leaving little time for leisure and more for “getting things done.” Now, she rocks the secretarial world, proving that resilience and responsibility can be a powerful combo, even without the luxury of leisurely pursuits. Underestimate Chioma at your peril.
Looking at this one would say that this was a love between a saver and a spender. The first year of their marriage passed with them enjoying the blissful honeymoon period.
Just when they thought their hearts were full, Seun and Chioma received the ultimate upgrade in the middle of the second year: twins! Cue in the double swaddles and sleepless nights (but also double the snuggles!).
In other words, this turned out to be both a blessing and a curse. Seun’s inconsistent income and propensity for spending clashed with Chioma’s commitment to supporting her siblings’ education, creating a complex financial challenge.
Their affection had curdled into something resembling expired yogurt, leaving a sour taste in everyone’s mouth (especially the kids). Even the nosy neighbours, usually quick to jump to conclusions, wondered if true love could be vanquished by village witches. Talk about an underwhelming villain.
However, this had nothing to do with the supernatural.
After Chioma went to buy the babies’ things one day, she noticed the increment in the price of everything. She broke down and called her friend and narrated the situation of her marital life. Her friend recommended that she talk to her husband calmly and look into opening a joint investment account for the big spending like the children’s education, house rent, and so on. Then have a budgeted amount for other things like helping family, groceries, and any other thing they might want to buy.
Chioma considered this and proposed it to Seun. After putting this in effect, they discovered the benefits. Apart from having increased interest accrued to the account, there was also transparency and trust. They were able to keep track of their income, expenses and savings which made them able to reach their long-term financial goals. Paying bills was also so much easier with a joint account. If there was anything they needed to pay for, they shared the expenses and lightened the burden on each other.
There was also unity when it came to their budgeting goals and as parents, they had the responsibility of supporting their kids, equally. The strain of being the breadwinner wasn’t just on one person and they had their money making more money for them. Soon after, the honeymoon period of course resumed and hasn’t ended till date and now I can for sure say that they lived happily ever after because ‘a couple that saves together, stays together’.
