By the end of this year, I’ll be 26.
It’s no brainer that I do not have my entire life figured out and sometimes, I beat myself up to do better and take steps to improve this very life of mine. In recent times, I have seen the emerging need to include insurance as part of my life plans. It is very shocking for my Gen Z self to even be thinking about insurance, especially when I grew up being ignorant about it. But at the same time, I now have too much information at my disposal to cling unto ignorance.
Let me run you through the last six months of my life.
I have struggled with my phone and wailed for a new one because it’s starting to malfunction. My microwave caught fire and I haven’t been able to fix or replace it – so now, every time I want to heat up food, it’s a whole process with the gas. A family member had a health scare and we had to pay out of pocket. That period was chaotic. Somewhere in between all this, I couldn’t help but think of how insurance would have saved me a lot of money, stress, and emotional fatigue.
A lot more things have happened – but yeah, story of my life.
So, I sat down, took a deep breath, and decided to analyze the chaos. What if I had planned for some of these risks? Could insurance have changed the outcome? The answer is a big YES.
How I Could Have Avoided All That Drama
Here’s what I’ve learned and what you can learn from too, if you want the rest of 2025 to be stress-free, smarter, and more secure.
1. Householder /All-risk Insurance (a.k.a. The Device Cover)
If I had insured my phone and microwave under a Householder Insurance policy, I wouldn’t have spent days praying my phone would come back to life or manually heating up food like I’m in the 90s.
This type of insurance protects personal electronics and home appliances against damage, theft, or even electrical faults. Imagine getting a replacement or reimbursement instead of dipping into your savings.
2. Critical Illness Insurance
The health scare in my family was a big wake-up call. With Critical Illness Insurance, you get a lump-sum payout when diagnosed with any life-threatening illness covered under the policy.
This payout is not tied to hospital bills, it is money you can use however you need: travel abroad for treatment, cover lost income, or simply rest and recover.
3. Personal Accident Insurance
Let’s say I had slipped and injured myself during one of my “kitchen gas episodes.” With Personal Accident Insurance, I could have received compensation for medical costs, time off work, or permanent disability.
Accidents don’t send calendar invites. This plan ensures you or your family won’t have to bear the financial weight of sudden incidents.
4. Homeowner Insurance
My microwave situation could have been worse. The fire could have spread. That’s why Homeowner Insurance is a must-have. It protects your property and personal belongings from fire, flooding, burglary, and more. Even if you’re renting, you can insure the contents of your apartment.
5. Motor Insurance (Third Party or Comprehensive)
If you drive in Nigeria, you already know the roads don’t come with guarantees. From fender benders to full-on crashes, Motor Insurance protects both you and others. Go the extra mile with Comprehensive Cover that also protects you, your vehicle against theft, flood, and vandalism.
6. Travel Insurance
Planning a trip before the year ends? Whether it’s within Nigeria or abroad, travel can be unpredictable. Delays, medical emergencies, and lost baggage are all covered under Travel Insurance. This one is a no-brainer for December.
